Romans 13.6 and the purpose of government

Romans 13.6: “For the [governing] authorities are God’s servants…”

Government was instituted to accomplish God’s purposes on earth. Those purposes would be to contain the growth and expression of sin, to adjudicate problems between people so we can all get along and treat each other fairly, and because a just and peaceful society won’t happen all by itself. In a sense, our governing officials are supposed to be the “priests” of God’s temple, mediating His will to people, and representing God to the populace. Theoretically and ideally, if you want to know what God is like, you should be able to look at your government officials for an example—ruling with justice and integrity.
