Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea (Matthew 2.1; Luke 2.4-7), also known as the city of David, about 5-6 miles south of Jerusalem. Its earlier name was Ephrath (Genesis 35.19). It was also known as Bethlehem Judah, or Bethlehem Ephratha, to distinguish it from the Bethlehem in Galilee. He was born in Bethlehem as the fulfillment of the prophecy of Micah 5.2, written in about 700 BC.
No one knows whether he was born in a wing of a house, a stable, or a cave. All we know is that there was a manger nearby in which the baby could be laid.
