Paul is not claiming Jesus is merely a man. Paul is acknowledging that it was while Jesus was a man that he gave Himself as a ransom, mediating the sins of humanity (Heb. 8.6; 9.14-15; 12.24). Jesus became a man (Phil. 2.7) to take the role of the second Adam (Rom. 5.15-17). As a descendant of Abraham and then King David, He lived His life as one of us (Heb. 4.15). Paul is speaking of the significance of the incarnation.
