I believe in both the Big Bang theory and evolutionary theory.
I take Genesis 1-2 to be an account of how God ordered the world to function, not an account of its material manufacture. I believe this is the more literal approach to the text. If it were an account of manufacture, it would start with nothing but emptiness; if it were an account ordering what was there, it would start with chaotic disorder, as it does (Gn. 1.2).
Look at Day 1, for instance. He is telling us a period of light functions to give us day, a period of darkness functions to give us night, the alternating sequence of day and night give us evening and morning, and therefore on Day 1 God is ordering the function of TIME. Day 3 shows us how the earth functions: to bring forth vegetation. Day 4 shows us how the heavenly bodies function: to give us calendar and seasons. Day 6 shows us how humans function: to fill the Earth and subdue it, to rule the Earth as God would.
If we read Genesis 1-2 literally, they are literally about how God ordered the cosmos and the world and life to function, not about their material manufacture. Now, God certainly created the world, but that's not what Genesis 1 is about. The Bible doesn't tell us HOW God made the world (what mechanism He used) or how long it took.
Neither the Big Bang nor evolution go against what the Bible teaches, nor do they undermine the place of God, His power, or His sovereignty. We can see from biblical history that God often (always?) uses processes to accomplish His work. Then why not pre-history as well? And we know from the science that before the Big Bang, the laws of nature were not operative and nature didn't exist, so whatever caused the Big Bang was outside of nature. So I believe in all three: God as creator, Big Bang as the moment of creation, and evolution as the process God used. I call my position "Evolutionary Creationism" (Creation by God being the important part, and evolution being the mechanism and time scale God used).
I don't see any contradiction between Christianity (the Bible) and scientific theories. God Word in Scripture and God's Word in Nature are in perfect alignment and harmony.
These are probably new thoughts for you. Think about them, and let's talk more.
