Was this Jesus that saved them?

No one really knows, but it's possible. The phrase “son of the gods” represents a common Semitic expression for identifying a supernatural being. It's probably an angel or Jesus, and there's no way for us to know which. The point is God's presence with them and His deliverance of them.
