So in wondering if humans have free will, it came to me that I didn't really understand what free will even was.

I guess to understand this, I need to go back even further, to defining what the will is.

Anyone have thoughts on this subject?

Free will is pretty tough to define without allowing any loopholes. I can only sort of describe its characteristics and its necessity. If I had to define it, which is what you asked, I'd say it's the modulation of ongoing action, the distinguishing of potential courses, the ability to reason, the exercise of autonomy, and the consequent self-direction of thought and behavior.
