Do we have souls? Are we souls? How do we know? What happens to souls? Who has them? Let's talk.

What is a soul?

I'm doing a little project where I compare what religious leaders and scholars say about a soul, and what everyday believers think about a soul. So, in your own words, what is a soul? Your answer would be greatly appreciated.

A soul is the spiritual part of our being. While God expects us to engage him and love him with every part of our being (Mk. 12.30; Deut. 6.5: "Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength."), the soul is the particular part that relates to Him. It is believed to be the source of life within us, or even the core of our very being. As the spiritual part of our being, it is that part of us where the connection with God is made, just as the physical part of us is where where we engage with the material world and our mind is the part of us where we engage with the conceptual world.
