Who were they? Were they historical? What happened to them?

The calling of Simon Peter and his brother Andrew

Why does Mark 1:16-18 and John 1:35-42 tell different accounts of Simon Peter and Andrews calling?

They are two different incidents. In John 1, Jesus is meeting Andrew and another disciple (some think it's John). Andrew then introduces his brother Simon to Jesus, and Jesus renames Simon as Peter. But you'll notice that Jesus doesn't recruit them as followers at this particular time.

Mark's account, however, records a later time when Jesus actually says to Simon and Andrew to follow Him. So also He walks a little farther down the beach and at that time recruits James and John.
