What is the Bible? Why do we say it's God's Word? How did we get it? What makes it so special?

The Bible's total lack of authenticity

Postby Newbie » Wed Dec 11, 2013 5:48 pm

How is it that you believe the Bible is the Word of God despite its complete lack of authenticity?

Including the countless different translations, entire sections omitted and reworded, and infinite interpretations, how can you believe this book is infallible?

When I was losing my faith I started to study the history of the bible hoping to find solid groundworks to back up what it said, but I found the exact opposite. A group of people cobbling together different translations (not even bothering to translate the documents themselves) of manuscripts from the 4th century that were pretending to be from the 1st century into one collection that was supposed to be relevant at the time of King James. None of this screams "word of God" to me.

So please tell me, how is it that you can so readily believe this book is truth?

Yeah, your presupposition of "complete lack of authenticity" is a bit stunning. You seem to have faulty information about manuscripts from the 4th century, etc. that seems to be coloring your opinion. I hardly know where to begin. The Bible has quite a bit of authenticity, and your notion of "a group of people cobbling together..." is just misinformation.

The theology of inspiration of Scripture is tied to locutions (words, sentences, rhetorical structure, genres, etc.), and they have their source in God. Inerrancy and authority are related to the illocution (what they DID with the locution). Maybe I can say it this way: the authority and "infallibility" of the Bible attaches to the illocution of the human authors. This is to say that while we don't necessarily believe everything the writer believed (that the sky was a solid dome, for instance), we affirm what he wrote, understand what he was saying, and recognize the authority in it. I've tried to explain it, but if I've failed, just ask.

The authority of Scripture is vested in the meaning intended by the human communicator and given to him by the Holy Spirit, which is guided by an understanding of his illocutions. These human illocutions have authority because they are the means by which God gives his illocutions.

I think you've thrown out the Bible without a good understanding of what it is. Just ask and I'll explain more.
