There is no hard line of demarcation between natural reasoning and faith in interpreting the Scriptures. It’s not like we go into a trance and start channeling the Spirit when we open the Bible. What we believe is that, just like 2 Peter 1.20-21and John 16.13 that the Holy Spirit is helping us use our natural reasoning to guide us into truth and to carry us along, deepening our understanding and leading us to grow in both grace and knowledge (2 Pet. 3.18). It comes through meditation (Josh. 1.8; Ps. 119.15, 48), searching the Scriptures (Acts 17.11; 1 Pet. 1.10-12), study (Ezra 7.10; Jn. 5.39; 2 Tim. 4.13), and prayer.
Our goal is to correctly handle the Scriptures (2 Tim. 2.15). It takes a relationship with God, meditation, study, diligence, and knowing how to hear the voice of the Spirt. Matthew Henry wrote, "Those who teach the Word must be workmen; they have work to do, and they must take pains in it. Workmen that are unskillful, unfaithful, or lazy have need to be ashamed, but those who mind their business and keep to their work are workmen without shame.”
Good Bible interpretation, just like sanctification, is a cooperative effort of human dedication and the work of the Spirit in us.
