What is the Bible? Why do we say it's God's Word? How did we get it? What makes it so special?

How can I trust the Bible at all if it adapts and changes?

If the Bible needs to adapt and change to modern society, then how can we trust it at all?

My question isn't directed at people who argue that the Bible is immutable and unchanging, but rather, at some progressive Christians who claim that Scripture needs to adapt and update itself as society also changes and evolves.

  • First of all, if God is really so powerful, and Earth so tiny, then why does it make sense for God to change Himself to accommodate us? That would be like an ant colony in Arizona saying, "The United States president needs to change his ways to accommodate us, because our colony is changing how we do things."
  • Secondly, if God and the Bible need to change to adapt to society, then how do you know if He's ever "finished?" If He has to change according to popular human majority opinion, then what if society 100 years from now says "Slavery wasn't bad after all, let's go back to slavery" - does that mean slavery then becomes okay?

I know you're looking for comments from progressive Christians, but I'll just chime in briefly. The Bible does not need to adapt and change. It is God's revelation for all generations. The meaning and interpretation never change, and therefore we can trust it. But the application can change depending on the person, time, and culture.

It is my assessment that "progressive" Christians have deserted the Word of God to make it what they want it to be, and therefore distort its meaning at many turns, creating invalid interpretations.

God doesn't change Himself to accommodate us. But you want to talk to the progressives. If you want any conversation in my direction, just let me know and we can talk.
