Why did Noah have the ability to curse? What's the curse? Is Chinese the descendant of Canaan?

> Why did Noah have the ability to curse?

Anybody could curse someone else. The OT does have other examples of men cursing men: Josh 6.26; 9.23; Jer. 20.14, 15-17. There is no indication that this curse, or the blessings, have their origin in God. There is no "Thus says the Lord . . . ." They are the Noah’s pronouncement, not God's (cf. the use of the first person in 27:37). Even so, such things were taken very seriously and considered to have influence in the unfolding of history and personal destiny.

> What's the curse?

The curse is that the Canaanites would be subservient to the Israelites, something that happened in the era of David (about 1000 BC) when the Israelites conquered the whole land.

> Is Chinese the descendant of Canaan?

No. The Canaanites were the descendants of Canaan. The Canaanites were Semitic. Genetic examinations of Canaanite organic remains show that the Canaanites derived from a mixture of the local Mediterranean Neolithic populations and eastern migrant groups related to Chalcolithic Iranians. That mixture occurred sometime between 4580 and 1750 BC.

From an article in Biblical Archaeology Review, "According to the Bible, the Israelites were instructed to annihilate the Canaanites, but failed to do so (Judges 1.31). This is confirmed. The Canaanites who survived became known as the Phoenicians during the Iron Age. And indeed, the genetic comparison of the five Bronze Age Sidonians (discovered by archaeologists) with 99 modern Lebanese reveals 'substantial genetic continuity' between the ancient Canaanites and the modern Lebanese, who share 93% of their DNA with the ancient Sidonians. This provides a solid connection between the Canaanites, the Phoenicians and the modern Lebanese."
