1. Obviously, being convinced He exists. There's no value in "knowing" a figment of the imagination.
2. Obviously, second, to understand what God is like, i.e., to accept the Bible as a legitimate expression of God's nature character, and behavior. If we don't accept the text as legitimate, we will reject the information it gives that increases our knowledge of Him.
3. To receive the presence of God inside of you. You cannot know Him until you commit. (You can't own a house until you sign on the line. You can't begin work on a job until you sign the contract guaranteeing that the job is yours. You can't learn parenting until you have a kid.)
4. Once you are convinced of God's existence, admit that the Bible is the legitimate revelation of Him, commit yourself to the relationship, and let God come to live inside you, now you can begin the process of knowing Him. It will involved (a) reading the Bible (b) submitting to God's will, (c) obeying what the Bible says, and (d) becoming more like Christ based on what you read and obey.
