Why is Israel referred to as Ephraim?

Ephraim was the leading tribe of the coalition of the northern ten tribes, which was commonly known as "Israel" during the divided monarchy. Because they were a large tribe and leader, the name was sometimes used to signify the whole kingdom of Israel.
