New American Bible Revised Edition Saint Joseph Edition
"8 If the Lord is pleased with us, he will bring us in to this land and give it to us, a land which flows with milk and honey. 9 Only do not rebel against the Lord! You need not be afraid of the people of the land, for they are but food for us!* Their protection has left them, but the Lord is with us. Do not fear them."
*Footnote: They are but food for us: lit., "for they are our bread." "Bread" (Heb. lechem) is here used in the sense of "prey, spoils" to be consumed by an invader. This is the answer to the pessimistic report that this land "consumes its inhabitants" (13:32).
KJV
"8 If the Lord delight in us, then he will bring us into this land, and give it us; a land which floweth with milk and honey. 9 Only rebel not yet against the Lord, neither fear ye the people of the land; for they are bread for us: their defence is departed from them, and the Lord is with us: fear them not.*"
*Footnote: defence: Heb. shadow
NIV
"8 If the Lord is pleased with us, he will lead us into that land, a land flowing with milk and honey, and will give it to us. 9 Only do not rebel against the Lord. And do not be afraid of the people of the land, because we will devour them. Their protection is gone, but the Lord is with us. Do not be afraid of them."
