"Believing in the Bible makes you a Christian, understanding and reading though it makes you an Atheist."

What is your opinion on this quote? I saw this comment on Facebook the other day and would like to have your insight on it.

It's absurd on multiple levels.

First, believing in Jesus makes you a Christian, not the Bible. The Bible doesn't save, but Jesus does.

Second, that would mean that fantastic scholars and theologians throughout history such as Athanasius, Justin Martyr, Gregory of Nyssa, Origen, Augustine, Aquinas, Luther, Calvin, Karl Barth, Rowan Williams, NT Wright, Stanley Hauerwas, and Walter Brueggemann have all been atheists.

Third, that quote just demonstrates that whoever shared it has the same flat view of the Bible as fundamentalists do.

Foolish thinking from foolish atheists, trying to be cute and funny.

Share the gospel with them, pray for them to come to faith, and dust the sand off your sandals when they refuse to repent and turn to Jesus for salvation.

Like most Facebook content (and much of online atheism), it's:

-Arrogant
-Pseudo-Intellectual
-Remarkably untrue

Christians don't believe in a book, Christians believe in Jesus Christ. That's what makes them Christians.

How witty. And false in multiple ways. Believing in the Bible doesn't make you a Christian, first of all, so that half displays a fundamental misunderstanding of Christianity at its core... the second half is just meant to be a joke, but fails in its execution of an attempt to try and be funny.

It's a ridiculous statement by people who obviously don't understand the Bible, who don't know what faith ("believing") really is, and who haven't had enough conversations with people who do know the Bible.
