Proverbs 6.19 — Being a false witness in court

The sixth abomination to God’s soul: “a false witness who pours out lies.” This isn’t a repetition of v. 17 (a lying tongue), because the nuance here is more of judicial “false witness” rather than being a liar. This one affects the courts, politics, and the whole community.

You see, LYING is an offense against yourself and the object of your lie, but being a FALSE WITNESS is an offense against society and causes the breakdown of the values of our culture. If we can’t trust our witnesses in court, then justice is a travesty. If we can’t trust those who govern us, then our society will be filled with the abuse of power and the oppression of the underprivileged. If we can’t trust our media, we are just pawns to be manipulated. If we can’t trust our business leaders, then money becomes the driving force of our country instead of character.
